Iron BIAN Chemistry

We have been developing iron-based (and other abundant metal elements) complexes as replacements for precious metal catalysts. Typically, iron undergoes single-electron changes in oxidation state which are incompatible with the more traditional two-electron processes of oxidative addition, reductive elimination etc. Our approach has been to marry "1-electron metals" with redox non-innocent ligand structures, thus allowing the complex to carry out multi-electron transformations where the ligand plays an active role in mediating electron management.
